I wrote about how much I loved BMW's Vision EfficientDynamics concept almost 2 years ago. This morning in Frankfurt, BMW took it one step closer to production as the second model in the new electric BMW i sub-brand: the i8. Looking like a hybrid 6/8-series that fell through a portal from 2050, the latest concept shares much of the original's DNA -- making me wonder why it took so long to reach production? The answer, of course, is the electric powertrain. Based on my interpretation, it looks like BMW has successfully implemented the "skateboard" concept that GM has been promising us for almost 10 years. The car should hit 60mph in less than 5 seconds, but only has a range of 35km in all-electric mode. It should be stressed that this is still a concept and the production model (due sometime after 2012) could still vary considerably.
